Assembly for Chinatown
Project Type: Public installation, Design/Build
Collaborators: Think!Chinatown
Assembly for Chinatown is an initiative to aid Chinatown in New York’s city-wide reopening with fully subsidized, code compliant outdoor build outs, beautification and site specific guidance. As a complement to the existing top-down efforts around the city, this project aims to aid overlooked members of our communities through fostering a methodology of designing for and with communities.
While restaurants in other neighborhoods have quickly responded to take advantage of DOT’s new Open Restaurants program, many independent and family-owned restaurants in Chinatown are struggling with adapting. In the past, outdoor dining in Chinatown has not been a common practice. Restaurants are faced with learning about new business practices, designing new dining spaces, acquiring materials, construction and complying to shifting health standards and DOT regulations, all while they are already low on cash flow.
In collaboration with local grassroots organization Think!Chinatown, we are designing solutions and raising funds to aid local businesses in reopening.
